Android Phones Now Capable of Reading QR Codes Remotely

Android Phones Now Capable of Reading QR Codes Remotely - Android users might soon have an easier time reading QR codes from a distance. Google is currently developing a code scanner that automatically detects QR codes in the camera frame, zooms in, and reads the information. Although this feature is not yet available on devices, Google has included it in the latest APIs made accessible to developers. Improved Code Scanner API Google has updated its code scanner API to include this new functionality. While it is currently integrated into Google's QR Code Scanner system app, developers can implement it into their own apps as well. Enhanced User Experience By implementing the code scanner API, developers can save time by not having to build a custom camera experience and users won't need to grant camera permissions. The API utilizes Google's on-device machine learning to interpret QR codes, ensuring user privacy by only outputting a Barcode object to the app. Although the exact technical details are unknown, similar to AI upscaling for other media types, Google's machine learning algorithms likely play a role. Compatibility and Availability According to Android expert Mishaal Rahman, the new auto-zoom feature is included in the bundled ML Kit Barcode Scanning API library versions 17.2.0 and 18.3.0 (available for download via Google Play Services). Additionally, it is part of version 16.1.0 of the code scanner API alone. It is possible that devices running Android 13 or newer, which utilize the same ML Kit Barcode Scanning library, may receive this convenient QR code scanning feature. Some evidence suggests it may already be rolling out via GMS, a proprietary component of Android licensed to select manufacturers. Considerations and Expectations It remains unclear how effective this feature will be on devices with lower-quality cameras or if it will extend beyond Google's Pixel smartphones. Nevertheless, the feature is intriguing, and it is hoped that it will soon be incorporated into developers' apps and widely available on various devices. Newest News Other News
